Paris Maghoma rescued a point but a 2-2 League One draw with Shrewsbury Town dented Bolton Wanderers' hopes of automatic promotion.

The third tier's lowest scorers twice shocked their hosts by taking the lead.

But facing a first home defeat to their visitors for 34 years, Bolton salvaged a draw when Maghoma fired home his ninth goal of the campaign after 71 minutes.

However, Ian Evatt's side still trail second-placed Derby by three points, with both teams having two further games to play.

Shrewsbury survived an early scare when Mal Benning deflected a Cameron Jerome effort against his own post.

Shrews goalkeeper Marko Marosi - in excellent form throughout - twice denied Aaron Collins before Tom Bloxham's surging run and excellent delivery set up Daniel Udoh's 21st-minute opener.

Veteran Jerome equalised after 41 minutes with his first Bolton league goal and first since scoring for Luton in October 2022.

But Jordan Shipley's stunning left-footed effort from Elliott Bennett's corner, two minutes later, restored Town's lead.

In the second half, Bolton battered away in vain until Maghoma's goal salvaged a draw.

    As a Derby fan I remember going to Northampton away thinking a win was in the bag. We lost 1-0. I should've known better! Football can provide the biggest upsets. Derby still haven't done it yet. I'm going to Cambridge on Saturday hoping for the best. Thank you Shrewsbury, but Bolton aren't out of it just yet.

    Its advantage my team now , I watched the game tonight , football is stupid at times and you should have won easily. If you end up in the play offs I do hope you make it up as you have been there the whole season .

    Brilliant result from the Shrews tonight for the Rams but it means dip sh&t if Derby can't win one of last two against teams in bottom 6. 4pts to guarantee but 3 should be enough given the goal difference. Couldn't wish for a better fixture than PBoro vs Bolton to help us so if we fail now then no one else's fault but our own. Youngest son is a Shrew who secured safety so this house is rocking.

    We rode our luck at times but what a valuable point this could prove to be, it could well be the point that keeps us up.
    Credit to Paul Hurst, he changed the formation from Saturday and we got a point.

    Fair play Shrewsbury gave it everything tonight, they really fought for it and scored a couple of decent goals.

    Bolton just not getting the rub of the green at moment, twice hit the post on Saturday and twice again tonight. Hopefully if we do end up in the play offs we will see our luck change.

    Usual melt down from our fans on social media. I honestly don't think we're doing too much wrong.

    I was at that match 34 years ago - We parked up, cut across the line of en-masse Bolton supporters with our amber/blue scarves flapping in the wind, proud as! I recall we had only won 1or2 games away all season and Bolton were right up there. We needed to win to avoid relegation... Score: Bolton Wanderers 0 Shrewsbury Town 2

    Looked anything but promotion contenders for the most part tonight, as sloppy a performance in the first half as I’ve seen in a while. Last two games likely to be dead rubbers, then let’s see after that.
