Leeds United “very keen” to land Prem linked starlet

Leeds United’s Sky Bet Championship campaign came to a juddering end on Wednesday evening when Derby County won 4-2 at Elland Road, the Rams going through to the play-off final against Aston Villa.

For the Whites, it’s a case of going back to the drawing board, gathering up their skirts and positioning themselves ready for the 2019/20 campaign in what will be their centenary year.

United fans will be hopeful, in the main, of two things before that campaign kicks off in early August: new signings and Marcelo Bielsa staying. Taking the latter first, Bielsa is the principle reason why Leeds turned a 13th place finish the season before in to a Premier League promotion push this time out.

However, some quarters of the media are saying that a Bielsa stay at Elland Road is dependent on money being spent and players he wants being brought to the club. With the staggering amount of injuries the Whites suffered, there is need for new bodies at the club.

One player being linked is Bolton Wanderers starlet Luca Connell – a player who Alan Nixon (below) says the Whites remain “very keen” on.

Connell, an 18-year-old who is both highly regarded and highly prized, is a player who’d easily slip into the Leeds United Under-23 set-up. The Liverpool-born defensive midfielder has risen to prominence this season, featuring in 12 first-team games across all competitions.

10 of these appearances (674 minutes) have been for the Trotters in their doomed Sky Bet Championship campaign. This has seen them not only relegated from the Championship, but also suffer cash flow problems to such a degree that the first team refused to play against Brentford.

However, as the RTd comment from Nixon implies, Leeds won’t have it all their own way in that they face Premier League competition from Sheffield United and Wolves.

Even still, the following from Nixon might be enough to give Leeds United fans hopes that they will land starlet Connell ahead of any Premier League suitors.

Bolton will be due a compensatory deal due to his age, with some putting the figure in the region of £300,000. A decent-sized figure for an 18-year-old, but there is evidence that this youngster is special.
